- Jake Gyllenhaal Was "Terrified" to Fight Conor McGregor, Who Accidentally Punched Him in the Face

"The funny part is that he had unlearn how to fight," Gyllenhaal said. "To learn how to fake fight is a whole other skill. We had to even slow it down." McGregor shared an Instagram video of Gyllenhaal and him receiving a shout-out in the stands during the event. The “Ambulance” star, 42, made a surprise appearance at a UFC 285 event in Las Vegas on March 4. Gyllenhaal and Hieron also faced off in the ring, pretending to dodge and pummel each other as the director called out cues and the audience went wild. Another clip from the event shows a camera crew following Gyllenhaal as he strutted into the arena wearing UFC warm-up gear.

The training that goes into this..." Jimmy Fallon said, as he showed a pic of a shirtless Gyllenhaal getting ready to fight in the ring. “I began to see how good all the actors are and how skilled they are and how believable,” McGregor says. “And then I thought, ‘Jeez, I'm not an actor here … It's going to stand out really obvious that I’m the new guy, or I just don't know what I'm doing. The first scene the two shot together is seen in the trailer when Knox headbutts Dalton at the bar.

Like the source material, it features plenty of action-packed scenes, including one that led to Gyllenhaal actually getting punched in the face by McGregor. Gyllenhaal plays Elwood Dalton in the reboot, and looked absolutely shredded when he weighed in for his fictional middleweight title bout against champ Jax Harris, played by former mixed martial artist and UFC fighter, Jay Hieron. However, not all was as it seemed, as the 42-year-old actor was actually filming a faux fight for a remake of the 1989 cult classic film, Road House, starring Patrick Swayze.

So at a certain point, you have to convince yourself of that stuff as an actor. As soon as I could feel that crowd and get the camera on you and come out – I realized, and I think I knew this before but I didn’t really feel it until I was in there – that’s a sacred space, the octagon. Be sure to visit the MMA Junkie Instagram page and YouTube channel to discuss this and more content with fans of mixed martial arts. The quintessential movie bar fight — full of bodies flying, wild punches, glass shattering and furniture breaking — gets a hilarious new twist in the remake of "Road House" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. In the upcoming “Road House” remake, Gyllenhaal will play Elwood Dalton (originally portrayed by Patrick Swayze in the 1989 film), a former fighter who becomes a bouncer at a small-town bar in Missouri.
At the movie’s South By Southwest festival premiere last week, Post Malone revealed to a packed theater his nerves about tackling the project, worrying, “There's no Auto-Tune for acting.” It’s a fear that McGregor shares for his first role. With UFC star Conor McGregor announcing from off-stage, the two actors followed the script and took their turns flexing on the scale and then faced off as fighters do. Hieron does some chirping before Gyllenhaal slaps him in the face and a scuffle ensues. You'll now receive the top MMA Junkie stories each day directly in your inbox. "He’s definitely kind of the stillest, and most confident in his stillness, that I’ve ever played," Gyllenhaal said. "One of the things I took from the original film and from Mr. Swayze was this kind of real confidence in observation.
Gyllenhaal also attended a weigh-in before the event with Hieron and Conor McGregor, an Irish mixed martial artist who’s also set to appear in the movie. Directed by Doug Liman, the upcoming “Road House” movie is based on the ‘80s cult classic of the same name starring Patrick Swayze as a bar bouncer with a violent past. Daniela Melchior and Billy Magnussen are also among the cast of the “Road House” revival. To make matters even more challenging, hotel room rates for the weekend of June 29, which culminates with UFC International Fight Week, aren't too kind either.

Kate has a keen interest in volunteering for animal shelters and when she isn’t lifting weights in her garden, she can be found walking her rescue dog. Climbing up on a causeway, Knox carjacks a pickup truck and crashes into the Road House, leading to a brutal fistfight with Dalton. When Brandt orders him to kill Dalton, Knox snaps Brandt's neck instead. He prepares to finish off Dalton with a shard of wood, but Dalton gains the upper hand and repeatedly stabs Knox into submission, leaving him for dead. Stealing a bomb-laden motorboat to reach Brandt's catamaran yacht, Dalton finds him with the sheriff, who tells him the kidnapping was a lie to lure Dalton aboard.

While filming “Road House,” a remake of the 1989 hit film, Gyllenhaal walked to the octagon looking absolutely shredded while playing the character of Elwood Dalton. “There’s just a focus and you have that before any sort of live event. I just tried to emulate what I’ve seen and studied other fighters and studied those walkouts. They’re all so different, and then you start to realize it’s really about the individual, and each individual doesn’t need to come out as so tough. They come out however they want to come out, and they’re fierce however they’re fierce.
The UFC's involvement in the 'Road House remake' sets it apart from the original 1989 flick starring Patrick Swayze, however there is one key element that remains the same about the film and the UFC was close to not having it. The Nightcrawler actor was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 18 to talk about starring in a remake of the 1989 Road House starring Patrick Swayze. Not many people could go from fighting UFC Champion Conor McGregor to starring in Shakespeare on Broadway alongside Denzel Washington, but Jake Gyllenhaal has the range. While filming that first scene, McGregor kept brawling, unaware they weren’t being filmed.
After Dalton takes on his job at the roadhouse and begins intimidating some of the bars' rowdy clients, he and its owner (Jessica Williams) are threatened by a group of men who want to take the property for themselves. This includes MMA fighter Conor McGregor in his first-ever movie role. On Wednesday, the actor, 43, shared behind-the-scenes photos from the upcoming film on Instagram, including a snapshot of the actor taking an ice bath in what appears to be a large garbage bin. "The energy was so incredible," Gyllenhaal recalled filming his UFC fight scene. "That was pretty nerve-racking. They had never allowed anyone who wasn't a fighter into the ring, and I'm wearing the UFC shorts and it has my character's name on it," recalled the Oscar nominee. "We surprised an audience of 15,000 people after the undercards, before the main event. We were given a certain amount of time to shoot a little bit of this fight sequence. They kind of got that we were fake fighting, but they were still cheering."
He is approached by Frankie, the owner of an unruly roadhouse in the Florida Keys community of Glass Key, who offers him a job as head bouncer. Initially hesitant, Dalton takes up the offer after narrowly averting a suicide attempt with a freight train that destroys his car. He takes a bus to Frankie's establishment, called simply The Road House, and befriends Charlie, a teenager who runs a bookstore with her father, Stephen. "It was late because we shot a lot of these fight scenes at night so it was like 3 a.m. and he was talking to me really close," he continued. "And he was like, 'Yeah, that left hook looks good, but then when you do it' Boom! And he hit me by mistake." During UFC 285 in March 2023, Gyllenhaal made a surprise appearance at the weigh-ins and on fight night when he recorded scenes for the film with UFC veteran Jay Hieron in front of a live audience.
